Bob Darlington was born December 26, 1923 in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and attended Swarthmore College. Because of his Quaker background, Bob claimed conscientious objector status as World War II began. He quickly gave up this status as he watched others take on the responsibility of going to war. Bob left Swarthmore to serve with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy, where he was awarded a Bronze Star. Bob received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in architecture, becoming a teacher and architect. After 1969, he lived in Massachusetts, where he passed away on January 19, 2014. His poem "These Old Scars" is being published here for the first time.
